Project Coordination

a) Transfer Innovations (TI) Projects

Transfer Innovations (TI) projects are undertaken by articulation committees with funding approved by BCCAT's Transfer and Articulation Committee (TAC). Projects focus on a particular program or discipline and are designed to improve transfer by recommending innovative approaches or providing better information on transfer options and pathways within that subject area. The major types of TI projects are Flexible Pre-Majors (FPMs) and transfer grids/matrices. Three projects were completed during 2010-11 and four new projects were approved. The Special Projects Coordinator, Jennifer Orum, works with articulation committees to ensure that contracts are completed, deliverables from previous contracts are updated, and committees receive the support they need as they undertake this important work.

The following TI projects were either approved to proceed or finalized by the TAC this year:

  • Tourism Management (Block Transfer Updating)
  • ESL Canadian Language Benchmarks: Phase III (Assessment)
  • Economics (Flexible Pre-Major Analysis – Part 1)
  • Economics (Flexible Pre-Major Analysis - Part 2 ) – new, approved
  • Applied Business Technology/Office Administration (Medical Office Assistant Transfer Grid) – new, approved
  • Computer Education (Flexible Pre-Major Implementation) – new, approved
  • Early Childhood Education (Transfer Matrix Incorporating Private Institutions) – new, approved

    i) External Evaluation of TI Program: Implementation Phase I

In 2009-10 an external evaluation of the TI program was undertaken. This year, BCCAT began the first phase of implementing recommendations from this report. This involved three main activities:

    • TI Transition Plan: Between November 2009 and November 2010, the TAC suspended review of new project proposals, other than Flexible Pre-Majors. At its fall 2010 meeting TAC decided to resume review of TI project proposals on a case-by-case basis, at least until decisions are made on how to proceed with implementing recommendations related to all facets of the TI Review.
    • Flexible Pre- Majors (FPM) Process Working Group: A representative working group was formed to review the processes needed to support implementation of FPMs and to recommend administrative and advising strategies to address both student and institutional needs. The FPM Process Working Group met on January 31 and March 7, and their work is due for completion by summer 2011.
    • Tracking Block Transfer Students: A study of the methods and data required to track the transfer of students who gain credit for a completed block of courses was completed by Jill Lawrence under the Admissions Committee work plan. The report, designed for internal use, made brief reference to the tracking of students who complete Flexible Pre-Majors.

b) Transfer and Articulation Projects (TAP)

For a decade BCCAT supported and coordinated projects through the TAP Fund, ones that improved transfer but did not fit the criteria outlined for TI funding. TAP projects normally focused on the development of information resources (such as brochures or websites). At its May meeting, the TAC approved the deletion of the TAP program and the transfer of a small amount of remaining funds into the TI project account.
